Bedford – Loraine (née Brainard) Shonting, 90, of Bedford Hills Care and Rehabilitation Center died January 23, 2012. She was born in Union City, NJ on October 11, 1921 to William G. Brainard and Anna D. (Nagle) Brainard.
She grew up in New Milford and Dumont NJ, graduating from Dumont High School Class of 1940.
She worked as a secretary for the United States Trust Co. and JC Peneny. She resided for a number of years in Closter, NJ where she worked as a legal secretary for the Pelletier Agency.
In 1971 she moved to Harrington Park, NJ and retired to Sunsites in Pearce, Arizona in 1974. In 1990 she became editor of the Sunsiter a small regional newspaper until its sale in 1998. In 1999 she moved to Air Force Village II in San Antonio and then to Bedford, NH in 2008 to be near her family.
Her interests included a lifelong love of music both singing and playing the piano. In her retirement years she enjoyed travel in the Southwest.
She was predeceased by three husbands; John Radick, from whom she was divorced, died in 1997, Donald Mackintosh, in 1988, and Colonel Howard Shonting in 2004, as well as 4 brothers, George, Ralph, Nagel and Franklin.
Family members include two sons; Kenneth R. Radick and his wife Lorraine (Gendron) of Bedford, Douglas A. Radick and his wife Elise of Closter, NJ, one granddaughter Lea Radick, of Washington, DC., a step-son Richard Mackintosh and his wife Kathy of Milford, PA, a sister-in-law Johanna Brainard of Delhi, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be on Saturday from 1 to 3 PM at J.N. Boufford & Sons Funeral Home, 110 Bridge Street. A funeral service will take place at 3 PM following calling hours.
Burial will be at the Walton Cemetery in Walton, NY. A graveside service will be held later this year during the Brainard family reunion.
