BEVERLY: Gladys E. (Hyland) Herzog, 89, formerly of Pickett Street, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 21, 2012 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital, Gloucester. She was the wife of the late Robert E. Herzog who died in 2003.
Born in Beverly on October 17, 1922, she was the daughter of the late William and Helen (Cassidy) Hyland. A lifelong resident of Beverly, Gladys was a graduate of Beverly High School and Salem State College.
Gladys was once a teacher in the Beverly and Saugus Public School systems. A longtime communicant of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, she was a member of the Ladies Sodality. As the daughter of Irish immigrants, Gladys was very proud of her heritage. She was especially well known for her home-baked Soda Bread. Gladys loved to travel and visited Bermuda, England, Ireland, Germany, Puerto Rico and Yugoslavia.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ellen Donnell and her husband, Gary of Beverly and Dr. Anne Herzog and her husband, Hollis Graham of Wilbraham; three sons, Robert Herzog and his wife, Susan (Harrington) of Beverly, Dr. John Herzog and his wife, Barbara (Isler) and James Herzog and his wife, Eileen (Carey) all of Danvers; seven grandchildren, Emma, Jessica and Mark Herzog, Sarah (Donnell) Bowen, Lauren (Donnell) Costa and Emily and Lucas Graham; a brother, William Hyland and his wife, Grace of Beverly; a sister-in-law, Carol Whitmarsh of Beverly and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at St. Richard’s Church, Forest St., Danvers at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly from 5 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472. Interment will be held in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beverly.
