ROCKPORT: Stanley Thomas Meuse, husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Meuse, passed away peacefully in his sleep at Den-Mar Rehab and Nursing Center in Rockport on January 14, 2012. He was 89 years old.
Born in Gloucester on December 24, 1922, he was the son of the late Samuel Meuse and Mary Loretta (Comeau) Larkin. Stanley was a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1941.
He spent a summer working aboard the Schooner Roseway as a deck hand and lookout. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Davison as a Signalman Second Class from 1942 to 1945. He was in the Asiatic Pacific, the American Theatre and the European Theatre, where he attained two stars.
On October 23, 1949, Stan and Betty were married. They made a brief foray out to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they lived for three years, but they missed the ocean and their friends and family so much that they came home to stay for the rest of their years.
When they returned in 1954, Stan started his own barbering business and was known as ‘Stan the Barber Man’ in East Gloucester Square for many years. Following that, he worked as head cashier (and some might say standup comedian) at The Building Center in Gloucester.
He was known and loved by many for his humor, the twinkle in his eyes and his helping hands. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife, Betty, with whom he shared 62 adventure filled years of marriage, he is also survived by his son, Dale R. Meuse of East Sullivan, NH and his daughter, Deborah E. Meuse of Peterborough, NH; his grandchildren Kelsey R. Meuse Hiranandaney and Sam A. Meuse-Hassinger; his sister , Pricilla O’Neil of Everett, MA, and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his son, Donald S. Meuse, his brothers, Charles, David and Edward Larkin, and his sisters, Lucy Parsons and Elizabeth Martell.
Visiting hours will be held next Friday, January 27th in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 2 to 4 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. The family requests that you withhold cards and flowers and instead please say a prayer for Stan’s safe voyage to heaven.
