Brown-West, Dr. Orikaye G., of Lanham, MD and formerly of Marshfield, MA died Sunday, January 8, 2012. Devoted father of Diepriye Brown-West of Maryland, Isoboye and Abiye Brown-West of Nigeria, Boma Brown-West of Michigan, Obele Brown-West of New York, Nonye and Orikaye Jr. Brown-West of Marshfield, MA, and Ibiye Brown-West (deceased). Loving grandfather of Boluwatife and Teniola Abdulkareem of Maryland, and Krystal Brown-West of Nigeria. Dr. Brown-West was born in Buguma of Rivers State of Nigeria on August 24,1945 to the late Mr. Gogo Brown-West and the late Mrs. Finta (Taylor) Brown-West. Pre-deceased by older sister Mrs. Seniboba Amachree and survived by brothers, including Dr. Igolima T. Amachree of Illinois; sisters including, Daerebo Brown-West of California; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Immigrating to the United States in 1977, Dr. Brown-West received two Masters Degrees in Civil Engineering and Management from the Polytechnic University of New York and his Ph.D in Civil Engineering from the University of Connecticut. For over 40 years, Dr. Brown-West had a successful and broad career in professorship at a number of universities, campus facilities management, design, construction management, and urban transportation systems – namely as a Senior Area Traffic Supervising Manager and Construction Engineer in the $14.8 Billion Boston Central Artery Tunnel Project (“The Big Dig”), the largest public works project in the history of the United States. The Big Dig was the subject of Dr. Brown-West’s two published books, IN DEFENSE OF THE BIG DIG: How Politics Affected the Planning, Design and Construction of the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel Project and From Dream To Reality: Scaling the Construction Planning Hurdles Of A Megaproject. Dr. Brown-West was a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) and had memberships in the Transportation Research Board, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, as well as a number of other professional societies. Dr. Brown-West also served as a Massachusetts Delegate to the National Summit on Africa where delegates from the 50 states of United States created and finalized the Summit's National Plan of Action for Africa. In 1999, Dr. Brown-West was also elected Commissioner of the Board of Public Works in the Town of Marshfield and served for two consecutive terms.
