Joan M. (Callaghan) Skelly, age 78, of Brockton, passed away peacefully January 13, 2012, following a period of failing health. She was the wife of the late John A. Skelly to whom she was married for 52 years. She was the daughter of the late Louise (Segadelli) and Peter Callaghan and had been a lifelong resident of Brockton. Joan graduated from Brockton High School, class of 1953, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse and had been employed at the Goddard Hospital and as a private duty nurse.
Joan enjoyed the theater, museums, Boston Symphony and events at the Kennedy Library. Train rides to Boston to attend these events were frequent treats, as well as lunches with friends, afternoon visits to Dunkin Donuts, occasional visits to casinos, couponing, scratch tickets and trips to Ireland, Italy and Bermuda. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes Church and was a longtime member of the Twentieth Century Catholic Club and a member of the Council on Aging.
Joan is survived by her son Peter Skelly and his wife Jean of Wareham; her grandchildren Courtney of Wareham and Justin of Onset; and a dear cousin Frank Green of Centerville.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Monday 4-7pm. A Funeral Procession will form at the funeral home Tuesday at 9:30am for a funeral mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 10:30am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
