Obituary

Doris Louise Higgins, 88, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, January 10, 2012. She was the daughter of the late William E. and Alice E. (Odie) Higgins. She leaves a sister, Dorothy (Higgins) Krause in Virginia, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 7 brothers, Raymond, Warren, Harry, Walter, Robert, Stanley, and Lawrence; and 1 sister, Elsie (Higgins) Stewart.
She was educated in both Auburn and Worcester schools where she also played professional girls softball and took part in many athletic activities, winning many ribbons. Doris was a Certified Dental Assistant for over 50 years. She took her certification courses at Memorial Hospital and also trained as a practical nurse at Chicago School of Nursing. Doris was President of the Worcester Dental Assistants Assoc. for 2 terms and President of Mass. Dental Assistants Association (1967-68). She was a member of District, State, and National Dental Assistants Associations. Doris was a life-member of ADAA and recently received Emeritus from the National Dental Assoc. Doris served as the delegate to the MA Convention 7 times and the National Convention 4 times. She served as Parliamentarian at the State- and Worcester-level for 6 years. Doris co-founded and coordinated the Dental Clinic at Mill Swan School for children with Cerebral Palsy. She recruited local dentists who, along with Doris, volunteered their time and talent at the clinic for 4 years. Doris was the recipient of the Achievement Award for "Best Program of the Year" from the National Dental Assoc. She won 7 trophies for her essays on dental work and has spoken at local schools relating to dentistry. Doris also took courses and became a registered stock broker and financial advisor.
She was the Sunday School Superintendent of Grace Baptist Church for 14 years and organized Junior Church there. She was a member of Christ the Rock Fellowship Church (formerly First Alliance Church). She gave her time and talent to various ministries at the church such as: Prayer-chain Leader and Head of the Stamp Ministry for Missions, Children's Evangelism teacher, and Awana Group Leader. Other church positions she held were secretary, governing-board member, deaconess, and president of the Women's Missionary Prayer Group. Her life was spent devoted to family, friends, and church - most of all to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She truly believed the promise of Eternal Life and loved the praise from the hymn My Jesus I Love Thee, "In mansions of glory and endless delight, I'll ever adore thee in heaven so bright."
The graveside funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 13, at 1 pm in Hope Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, at 1 pm at Christ the Rock Fellowship Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Missionary Fund, Christ the Rock Fellowship Church, 1411 Main St., Worcester MA 01603.
