Obituary

JANICE LOUISE (ODOM) BACON, of Hingham, passed peacefully on Jan. 10th, 2012 surrounded by her children after a brief illness. She was born in Fairfield, Alabama on Sept. 12th, 1924, the daughter of Walter Cefus Odom and Willie Maude (Kinman) Odom. Janice was the wife of the late Ronald Lincoln Bacon and mother of Allan L. Bacon and his partner Jacqueline C. Waynen, Charles L. Bacon and his wife Jennifer H. and Carolyn B. Antoine and her husband Michael S. all of Hingham and Lauren B. Martin and her husband Richard E. of Raleigh, NC. Grandmom of Charles L. Bacon, Jr. of Florida, Katherine E. Martin of Raleigh, NC, and Joseph W. and Rebecca L. Antoine both of Hingham. Great Grandmom of Makenzie Bacon of Weymouth and Jillian Bacon of Florida. Sister of Elaine Maude Wilson and Peggy Virginia Chesnut both of Alabama and the late Walter Leon Odom.

Janice began her career at the Hingham Journal with Frank "Scoop" McLean and also at the Hingham Town Hall Assessors Office. Her more current roles were associated with the Hingham Congregational Church where she was church secretary, church school coordinator, pastoral search committee member, senior and folk choir member and held many other positions in the church. She also enjoyed teaching tennis alongside her husband Ron who was the love of her life. They owned and operated the Old Colony Tennis Pro Shop in Hingham for many years where they taught tennis to many aspiring future tennis players who were served by nothing but the best. In addition, she was a hospice volunteer, den mother, created 10 amazing period outfits for a 1635 wedding and started her very fulfilling writing career at the Cohasset Knoll Nursing Center in Cohasset where she read poetry for the residents. She was a published text book writer for Christian Education. Jan's writing talents allowed her to create a poem or story at any given moment for any given occasion.

Jan enjoyed many trips to Alabama to visit family as well as trips to Prince Edward Island, Washington, the Grand Canyon, Main, North Carolina, New Hampshire and most of all her favorite place of serenity, Cape Cod. Other life enjoyments were her bridge group, hospice walk, Good Friday Walk Hugger, breakfast at Stars, star gazing, lunch at the beach and the creative writing group at the Hingham Senior Center.
