Obituary

Louis M. Sylvia, 83, of Acushnet died January 9, 2012 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Moniz) Sylvia, he lived in Acushnet most of his life.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in New Bedford.
Mr. Sylvia was formerly employed by St. Luke's Hospital for 25 years before retiring as Director of Unit Management. In retirement, he enjoyed being a funeral assistant at Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals.
He was a member of Jaycees Senate, Catholic Theater Guild and Junior Achievement.
Mr. Sylvia served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his twin brother, James Sylvia and his companion Mona Provencher of New Bedford; his special friend, Garland "Chico" Blanks of Dartmouth; 2 nephews, William Sylvia and Garrett Silvia; and a niece, Marilyn Sylvia.
He was the brother of the late Alice Sylvia and William Silvia and the uncle of the late John Sylvia.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Friday, January 13th at 10 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church, New Bedford at 11 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours Thursday, January 12th from 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke's Hospital 101 Page St., New Bedford, MA 02740.
