Obituary

JOHN J. "JACK" HORNSTRA, age 81, a lifelong resident of Hingham, died on Sunday, March 21st at his home after a long illness. Jack was born in Hingham and was a graduate of Hingham High School. He is best known as a local dairyman, who owned and operated Hornstra Farms in Hingham. Hornstra Farms was established by his grandfather in 1915 who came to this country from Holland. Jack owned and operated the farm, along with his brothers, Edward O. Hornstra and Frank H. Hornstra both now deceased.When Jack retired at the age of 62, his son, John B. Hornstra of Hingham took over the dairy farm and it continues to this day after 4 generations. Following his retirement, he became the groundskeeper for the Zildjian Estate on World's End in Hingham. Jack was a member of the Hingham Congregational Church, a former member of the Hingham Yacht Club and a former volunteer on the Hingham Fire Department attached to Engine 2. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, who also enjoyed vegetable gardening and travel. Husband of Patricia (Balch) Hornstra of Hingham, he leaves two daughters; Betsey H. Cogliani of Falmouth and Alison H. Hartmann of Hingham, and his son, John B. Hornstra also of Hingham. Also survived by 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be conducted on Friday, March 26th at 1 PM at the Hingham Congregational Church, 378 Main St. (Rt. 228), Hingham. Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Thursday evening from 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Bare Cove Fire Museum, P.O. Box 262, Hingham, MA 02043 or to the Wildlands Trust of Southeastern Massachusetts for the Preservation of the O'Neil Farm, P.O. Box 2282, Duxbury, MA 02331. The interment is to be private.
