Howard Coleman, age 80, a retired farmer and logger, died Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Graceland Nursing Home in Oxford, MS. He was born April 8, 1931 in Water Valley, MS to the late Vollie and Mary Gholson Coleman. Howard served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a member of the VFW and Bethel Baptist Church. He graduated from Jeff Davis High School in 1949 and was an outstanding baseball player. He enjoyed hunting and was especially fond of his cats and dogs. His greatest loves were his family and friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday, January 12, 2012 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, MS. A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Corinth National Military Cemetery in Corinth, MS with Jim Gholson, Garland Gholson, Tony Jack Coleman, Jay Coleman, Andy Coleman, Paul Gunn and Jackson Gunn serving as honorary pallbearers.
Howard is survived by three sisters, Frances Corinne Coleman, Lucile Coleman and Helen Coleman all of Los Angeles, CA; two nieces, Linda Coleman Griffin (Paul) of Houston, TX and Jill Coleman Gunn (Paul) of Jackson, MS; and two nephews, Andy Clark Coleman (Ramona) of Allen, TX and Tony Jack Coleman (Beth) of Pelahatchie, MS.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Annice Coleman and Fern Lee Coleman; and four brothers, Edward Coleman, Wilson Wayne Coleman, Leslie “Buddy” Coleman, Jack Anderson Coleman and Sam Benford Coleman.
