Obituary

David Birkbeck, age 79, of North Stonington, passed away Thursday at The Westerly Hospital.

He was born in North Stonington on September 15, 1932 the son of Frederick W. and Helen (Ryder) Birkbeck. He was a 1950 graduate of Stonington High School.

A life-long dairy farmer, Mr. Birkbeck was also employed by the North Stonington Highway Department for 37 years before retiring. He also served as a North Stonington Selectman from 1983-1995. Active in the community, he also was a member of the North Stonington Volunteer Fire Dept., the North Stonington Grange, Meadow Lake Dairy 4H Club, the North Stonington Wetlands Commission, and had served as North Stonington Assistant Historian.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Pare Birkbeck; his children, Carolyn (and Mark) Gencarella of Coventry, RI, Michele (and Steven) Brady of Nottingham, NH, Michael (and Kristine) Birkbeck of N. Stonington, Deborah (and Thomas) Weingart of Lebanon, and Lynn Birkbeck of N. Stonington; a sister, Eleanor (and Red) Banker of N. Stonington; 9 grandchildren Marybeth (and Tony) Nunes, Katelyn Hill (and fiancee Greg Sanders), Jonathan Hill, Vanessa Heberger, Julia Gencarella, Stacey, Matthew, Ryder Brady, Magan Birkbeck; 2 great-grandchildren Lydian and Hadley Nunes, ; a step-great-grandson, Holden Sanders, and nephews Brian, Bill, and Bruce Banker. He was predeceased by a brother, George and a son, Joseph.

David’s family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 4-7pm. A Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11am with procession and burial following at Pendleton Hill Cemetery, North Stonington.
