Obituary

Joan Clark Moffett Cook of Mystic passed gently on the morning of January 4 in Westerly Hospital, after being bid a fond farewell by her loving family.

Joan was born in Bronxville, New York, and was a graduate of Bronxville High School and Pine Manor College. In 1948, she married William W. Moffett with whom she had three children, raising their family in Bronxville, Northern California, Chicago, and Glen Ridge NJ. In Glen Ridge she was President of the Women’s Auxiliary for The Children’s Hospital of Newark. For many years she was also involved with the Children’s Theater of the Montclair Junior League, which performed live theater in inner city schools.

In Glen Ridge, she enjoyed a successful career in real estate, which she continued on Mason’s Island in Connecticut where, in 1976, she and her husband retired to the beloved family home known as “Red Shutters”. In Mystic CT, she served as President of the Board of the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She and her family were longtime members of Mason’s Island Yacht Club, where she excelled in tennis and bocce. She was also a founding member of the women’s social circle “Bitch and Stitch”, and was an avid bridge player.

Joan was predeceased by her first husband, William Moffett, in 1992. She then had the good fortune to fall in love a second time, marrying Richard F. Cook of Stonington. They were blessed with 17 years of happy marriage.

She leaves behind her husband, Richard F. Cook, her brother Warren Clark of Washington, D.C., her son William W. Moffett, Jr. of Pawcatuck, and daughters M. Catharine Moffett of Mystic and Susan Moffett of North Stonington. She also leaves behind seven doting grandchildren.

A Service of Celebration of Life will be held at the Union Baptist Church of Mystic on Sunday, January 8th, at 2:00 p.m., celebrated by Reverend Ann Aaberg of Mystic Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joan’s memory to The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.
