Jane Milnor Cole, 102, long time resident of Wellesley Hills, passed December 30, 2011 at the North Hill Retirement Center, Needham, Mass. She was an active volunteer through the Wellesley Junior Service League, Cub Scouts and President Emeritus of the Walker Missionary Home. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, October 27, 1909, she was educated at Miss Doherty’s College Preparatory School before coming East where she met Edward D. Cole. They married in 1931 and always lived in Wellesley. She was an active outdoors person and through her husband’s influence, was active in fishing and golf. She was probably best known for her success at golf where she was the Wellesley Country Club Woman’s Champion several years and once the Massachusetts Senior Woman’s champion. Geology and ornithology were always her interest and starting in 1973 she was a long term volunteer at the Boston Science Museum. In 1965 she attended Boston University and obtained a degree in Philosophy and Religion.
Jane is survived by two sons: Leland Milnor Cole of Terrace Park, Ohio and Joseph Edward Cole of Escondido, California and by five granddaughters: Julia Stephen, Nina Jahne, Ellen Irie, Katherine Conover, Sarah LeBeau and six great-grandchildren.
Burial will be with her husband at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley. A memorial service will be held at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church in January, 2012. Donations may be given to the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church 207 Washington St. Wellesley Hills, MA 02481.
