Obituary

WORCESTER-James O. Bynoe, 84, of 23 Adelle Circuit, formerly of Hollis Queens, NY, died Friday, March 19th in St. Vincent Hospital. His wife of 57 years, Catherine (English) Bynoe died in 1997. He leaves a daughter, June E. wife of George Camble of Acworth, GA, 6 grandchildren, Randy and Yvonne Reid both of Worcester, Gloria and Diane Reid both of Hollis Queens, NY, Dorothy Reid of Fall River, MA and Helen Husband of Acworth, GA, 12 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. 2 sisters, Elaine McCants and Doris Bynoe predeceased him.

He was born in Brooklyn, NY the son of James and Freda Bynoe, graduated from Boys High School and earned his BA in English and Education at Brooklyn College where he served as past president of the Negro Study Forum -Harriet Tubman Society. Mr. Bynoe was a buyer for Hartfield Zodys, Inc. for many years and several other department stores including Petrie Stores, Inc. where he was the first black buyer from 1949 to 1953. He was a tutor at Quinsigamond Elementary School, a volunteer at the Worcester Senior Center and a published author of poetry. He was past president of the Parent’s Daycare Association, Queen’s NY.

The funeral service is Thursday, March 25th at 7:00 PM in Belmont Street AME Zion Church, 21 Belmont Street. Burial will be private. A calling hour will be from 6:00 until 7:00 PM in the church. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Belmont Street AME Zion Church, 21 Belmont Street, Worcester, MA 01605. O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue is directing arrangements.
