Mrs. Emily Catherine (Brodbine) Cook, a long time resident of Andover and beloved wife of the late William P. Cook, who was a WWII Naval Aviator in the Pacific Theater, died at Sutton Hill Nursing Center in North Andover on Saturday evening, December 17, 2011, surrounded by her loving family. She was 89 years old.
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, on February 4, 1922, Emily was the beloved daughter of the late Nellie J. (Foley) and John Brodbine and step-daughter of the late James Kehoe. She was a graduate of Lynn English High School and Burdett College. Emily was a secretary at the First Service Command Headquarters in Brookline, a travel agent at Travel Anywhere travel agency in Andover and worked for Raytheon as a travel consultant. She was also a real estate broker.
During her college years, Emily was a member of Theta Alpha Chi sorority and was a lifelong member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a member of the Lynn Town Trotters and the Shawsheen Women's Club. Emily served as a Eucharistic Minister at her church, St. Augustine's in Andover. Emily, her husband Bill and family also hosted an ABC student in Andover. Throughout her life Emily volunteered for many causes, including the American Diabetes Association, Bread and Roses in Lawrence and the Andover Thrift store. She also served as a Cub Scout leader. Playing bridge was a lifelong passion and she belonged to several bridge groups. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the theater and museums.
Emily loved to travel and made several memorable trips to Europe, Asia, Caribbean and many places in the United States. She loved the ocean and enjoyed many days with her beloved family at the beach, especially at the family cottage on Cape Cod. But some of Emily's happiest times were spent at home, hosting large family gatherings, especially at Thanksgiving where she served up great feasts, great laughter and much love.
She will be greatly missed by her loving children; Paul W. and his wife Priscilla Cook of Haverhill, Kevin J. and his wife Donna Cook of Lawrence, Brianne Cook of Milford, New Hampshire, Eileen Igoe of Bradford, Karen and her husband Ed Metro of Acton and Maura and her husband Karim Azzaoui of Miami Beach, Florida, siblings; Maureen Griffin of Chester, Vermont and Thomas and his wife Elizabeth Kehoe of Haymarket, Virginia, sister-in-law of Ann Brodbine of Lynnfield ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Emily was also the sister of the late Atty. John Brodbine.
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover, Thursday, December 22, 2011, at 1:30 PM. Many relatives and friends respectfully attended. Calling hours were held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover, Wednesday, December 21, 2011, from 4 to 8 PM. Burial was held in Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover.
