Irene C. Harnden
Longtime Tewksbury Resident


TEWKSBURY: Irene C. (Hogan Shimkus) Harnden, age 89, passed away on Friday, December 16, 2011 at the Nevins Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre in Methuen.
She was the wife of Fred W. Harnden, who passed away on December 2, 1975.
Born in Boston on October 4, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Thomas P. and Mary C. (Hartling) Hogan.
Mrs. Harnden was raised in Tewksbury, attended Tewksbury schools and graduated from Tewksbury High School in 1940.
Prior to her retirement in 1985, she worked for many years as Nurses Aid at the Tewksbury Hospital. Mrs. Harnden previously worked as a Technical Operator for the Sylvania Corporation in Woburn.
Irene was a communicant of St. Dorothy's Church in Wilmington and St. Williams Parish in Tewksbury.
Mrs. Harnden was a member of the Tewksbury Golden Age Club and the Gold Star Wives of America.
She enjoyed knitting, bowling and playing bingo.
The family would like thank the staff at Nevins Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre for the superior care and kindness Irene received.
She is survived by one son, Charles T. Shimkus and his wife Hughena (MacIsaac) of Methuen; two grandchildren, Kimberly Pellerin and her husband Laurence of Milton Mills, NH and Kevin Shimkus and his wife Deanna of Portsmouth, VA; nine great grandchildren, Michael, Breana, Kameryn, Kevin Jr., Bailey, Larry, Adam, Emily and Elizabeth; her niece; Elaine Hogan; two nephews; Edward and Kevin Hogan.
Irene was the sister of the late Ella M. Hogan.
At her request there are No Calling hours. Funeral services will be held privately. Donations in her memory may be made to the Cancer Center Spindle Fund at Saints Medical Center, 2 Hospital Drive, Lowell, MA 01852. Arrangements entrusted to Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, Tewksbury.
