Doris I. McGurn was born on March 30th, 1926 in Woburn, MA, the daughter of French Canadian immigrants, James P. and Mary B. Daigneault. She graduated from Winchester High School and worked for the Shawmut Bank throughout her 20's. There she met many friends, enjoyed dancing at local ballrooms, and became a life-long friend of Alice Kelley. She married John J. McGurn in 1955 and had four children (John, Paula, James, and Mary). Doris returned to work as a medical secretary when her children were in school and retired early to spend more time with her husband who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. In addition to caring for John, Doris volunteered at the Winchester Jenks Senior Center.
Doris' life was guided by her Catholic faith and her love for her husband and children. She also has 4 granddaughters (Kerry, Kayla, Sarah, and Rachel). Doris was a quintessential mother who centered her life on those she loved. She especially enjoyed celebrating birthdays, Christmas, and her family's accomplishments. She had a talent for finding the perfect present and giving a hug at just the right moment. Doris also loved her friends, the beach, traveling, and babies. She was a budget magician who managed to plan summer beach vacations, trips to Europe (always with Alice and Frank Kelley), and somehow sent four children to college.
Doris struggled with dementia in her later years, yet her keen sense of humor always showed through in a smile, a dance, or a raised eyebrow. Her family and friends love her and will miss her dearly.
Her Funeral will be held from the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester on Sat., Dec. 17 at 10:30AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester, MA 01890 at 11:30AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting Hours will be on Fri. 5-8PM. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
