Ellen M. (Souza) Shepherd, 72, of New Bedford died Sunday March 14, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the former wife of Robert P. Shepherd of Williamstown.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Louis P. and Alma W. (Helme) Souza, she had lived in New Bedford all of her life.
She was a member of the New Hope Christian Church in Swansea.
Mrs. Shepherd was formerly employed as principal of H.A. Kempton School in New Bedford for many years until her retirement.
Mrs. Shepherd was a graduate of North Adams State College and Boston University.She was a board member and served as president for the Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Teachers, served on the board of trustees for Friends Academy, the Old Dartmouth Historical Society and St. Luke's Hospital. Mrs. Shepherd was a trustee and clerk of the Corporation at Compass Bank. She was recognized by the Martha Briggs Educational Society.
Survivors include her former husband; 3 sons, Louis Shepherd, and his wife Brenda, of New Bedford, Guy Shepherd, and his wife Suzanne, of Dartmouth, and Scott Shepherd, and his wife Tracy, of Providence, RI; a sister, Marial Harper, and her husband the Honorable Judge Ronald D. Harper, of Dartmouth; 7 grandchildren, Adam, Heather, Faith, Mariel, Zachary, Josiah, and Jordan; a niece, Aurienne Dembitzki; and a nephew, Treg Monty.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Memorial Service in the New Hope Christian Church, 1436 G.A.R. Hwy., (Rt. 6) Swansea Saturday, March 20th at 4 PM.
Visiting hours are omitted.
Interment private.
