Veva “Vicki” S. Cavaco, 85 of Somerset, passed away on December 10, 2011 at the Sarah S. Brayton Nursing Care Center. Born in Fall River, she moved to Somerset in 1974 and was a communicant of St. John of God Church.
She was the daughter of the late Antonio S. and the late Wilhermina (Ricardo) Cavaco and the stepdaughter of Maria Isabel (Raposo) Cavaco. She graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1945, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She then attended Herrick Business Institute of Fall River and received a diploma in stenography in 1946. From 1946-51 she worked as a Clerk Typist in the Personnel Records Division of the Consolidated Rendering Company (Butchers’ Rendering Company) of Fall River. In 1951, she entered the federal service as a clerk typist at the Naval Regional Medical Center (U.S. Naval Hospital) in Newport, RI. She was promoted to Military Personnel Clerk and retired in 1984. During her 32 years with the federal service, she received numerous outstanding performance awards and letters of commendation. Honored twice as the Civilian of the Quarter, she was presented with the Department of the Navy’s Meritorious Civilian pin. Following retirement from the U.S. Naval Hospital, she worked as a clerk typist in the Guidance Department at Somerset High School from 1984-87. She was a past Recording Secretary of the Coimbra Club and the American-Portuguese Veterans Auxiliary of Fall River.
Her survivors include a brother, Dr. Gilbert R. Cavaco of Somerset, a great niece, Rebecca (Amaral) Cummings of Manchester, NH and a great nephew, Michael Amaral of Nashua, NH. She was also the sister of the late Ruy R. Cavaco and aunt of the late Susan Ann (Cavaco) Amaral.
Following cremation, Veva’s mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday at 9:00 A.M. in St. John of God Church, Brayton Ave., Somerset. Interment in St. Patrick Cemetery, Somerset.
