Obituary

Brockton – Gladys (Swanson) Smith 90, formerly of Abington, died Friday November 25 with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of 46 years to the late Donald W. Smith.

Born and raised in Brockton she was the daughter of the late Carl and Helen (Sawtell) Swanson and a graduate of Brockton High, Class of 1939.

Before her retirement she had worked for over 20 years as a policy & claims processor for the former Joseph Doran Insurance Agency of Whitman.

Gladys had been an active member of her community servings as a Cub Scout Leader, and was a member of the Garden Club, the Mother’s Club and the Women’s Fellowship in her church.

She was known locally for her singing talent and shared her voice in the church choir as well as performing in many local talents shows.

She was a communicant of the United Church of Christ in Abington, and had held many service positions within the church as well.

She had loved to travel, was an avid dancer, and a gifted quilter.

She is survived by her loving children Daniel Smith and his wife Sharon of RI, Donna Ryan and her husband Andrew of East Bridgewater and Sylvia Delaney and her husband Edward of RI. She is also survived by her brothers Richard Swanson and his wife Betty of FL and Rev. Dr. Roger K. Swanson and his wife Beverly of IA, as well as 22 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She was predeceased by her dear friend Gordon Brown.

Her funeral service will be held Thursday December 1 at 11 AM in the United Church of Christ, 10 Bedford Street, Abington. Burial will follow in the Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday November 30 from 4-8 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman.
