TEWKSBURY - James F. Cooney, age 76, died Thursday, November 24, at home in Tewksbury, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Catherine (Downes) Cooney, with whom he celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary last July.
James was born in Lowell, January 21, 1935, a son of Bert and Marguerite (Dubuque) Cooney. He was a lifetime resident of Tewksbury, a graduate of Tewksbury High School Class of 1952, and a retired machinist from Tewksbury Hospital. He was a member of the East Coast Antique Tractor Club, I.H. Chapter 18 Tractor Club, and the Tewksbury Golden Age Club. He was also an active Senior Center participant.
Besides his wife Catherine, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law; Tricia A. Brenden and her husband Alan O. of Tewksbury, two sons and daughters-in-law; James F. Cooney Jr. and his wife Lauri (Goodrich) of Tewksbury, John T. Cooney and his wife Wendy E. (Ritter) of Derry, NH, a sister and brother-in-law; Martha Feran and her husband William of Tewksbury, two brothers and sisters-in-law; Thomas A. Cooney and his wife Susan (Lamoreaux) of Tewksbury, Peter D. Cooney and his wife June (Richter) of Dighton, MA, four grandchildren; Adam Brenden, Kristofer Cooney, Stacy Cooney, and Michael Cooney, as well as many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday, November 29, in St. William Church, Tewksbury. Burial followed at Tewksbury Cemetery. Tax deductible memorial donations to Friends of the Elderly C/O Tewksbury Senior Center, 175 Chandler Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876, will be appreciated.
