SALEM- Jeffrey D. Hobbs, 49, of Salem, husband of Lorraine (MacDougall) Hobbs, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 7, 2004.
Born in Salem, son of Everett W. Hobbs of Salem and Katherine (Konos) Davies of New Port Richey, Florida, he was educated at the Phillips Grammar School and graduated from Salem High School with the Class of 1972. He was raised in the Salem Willows and was happiest when he spent time in that area with friends and family.
He loved animals, always keeping a cat and was a voracious reader of marine-related books. He enjoyed his many nieces and nephews and had a special relationship with his niece Jenny Hobbs of Salem.
Mr. Hobbs, who served in the U. S. Army as a Military Policeman from 1977 to 1980, was stationed in Germany and attained the rank of Specialist Fourth Class.
Jeffrey had been continuously employed for the past 24 years in activities related to the sea. He commercially fished for tuna and became a land-based marketer of this fish. More recently, he served as an inspector fo the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in relation to the ocean disposal of dredge materials, a position he found very satisfying.
Besides his wife, with whom he shared 16 years of marriage, and his parents, he is survived by his step-mother, Patricia (Maurais) Hobbs of Salem, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carroll and Irene MacDougall of Beverly, three sisters, Priscilla Hobbs, Deirdre and her husband Edmund Morneau, all of Salem, Betty and her husband Bob Cooke of Beverly, two brothers, William and his wife Rosalie Hobbs of Swampscott, Charles Hobbs of Salem, a sister-in-law, Irene Tate of Beverly, many nieces and nephews and his life-long friends, John Kozik and Dennis Burns of the Salem Willows. He was predeceased by his step-father, Norman E. Davies and a brother, Kevin Antos.
