James E. Horton, 77

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

James E. Horton, 77, a lifelong resident of Mansfield, passed away on Tuesday November 15, 2011 at the Serenity Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wrentham.
Born in Taunton, MA on June 16, 1934, he was a loving son of the late Earle W., Sr. and Frances B. (Sanger) Horton.
Jim graduated from Mansfield High School and was a 1961 graduate of Burdett College. A retired Letter Carrier, Mr. Horton worked at the Mansfield Post Office for 34 years prior to retiring in 1992.
He faithfully served his country as a member of the United States Air Force. Following four years of service, he was honorably discharged on January 20, 1959 with the rank of Airman First Class. Jim also served for over 20 years as a Staff Sergeant in the Massachusetts National Guard, of which his unit was deployed to help during the “Blizzard of 78”
A member of the First Christian Church in West Mansfield, Jim was actively involved with the Masons for most of his life. His Masonic affiliations included being a member of St. James Lodge AF & AM in Mansfield, Bristol Lodge in North Attleboro and St. Albans Lodge in Foxboro.
His other Masonic involvements included being a member and former chaplain of the Rabboni Royal Arch Chapter in North Attleboro, a member and former treasurer of the Council in Attleboro, a member of the Knights Templer in Attleboro and was a past Grand Noble of the Mansfield Odd Fellows.
Mr. Horton was a member of the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution and enjoyed volunteering his time at the VA Medical Center in Brockton and at the Masonic Home.
He was the brother of Eugene S. Horton of East Dennis, the late Earle W. Horton, Jr. and Mary Frances Dupree. Mr. Horton is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Friday November 18th at 11:00 a.m. at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield. Military honors will be held at the conclusion of services.
Visiting hours have been omitted and those wishing may remember Jim with a donation in his memory made to the charity of ones choice.
