Obituary

Lucien J. Beauregard, 87, of New Bedford, died March 8, 2004, peacefully at Alden Court Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center.

He was the husband of Dorothy E. (Dempsey) Beauregard.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late William and Alexina (Gagnon) Beauregard, he had lived in New Bedford for most of his life. He was a graduate of St. Anthony Grammar School in New Bedford and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart High School in Metuchen, NJ. In 1971, he received a Masters degree in English from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

He was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church in North Dartmouth, where he also served as a Eucharistic minister.

Mr. Beauregard was formerly employed by University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth as an assistant Hockey and Baseball Coach and Equipment Manager until his retirement. He had also been a teaching brother at the University of Montreal, Granby, Quebec, Canada, and had also taught French and English in New Bedford Public Schools. He had also been employed as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service.

Mr. Beauregard was an active member and former president and star pitcher on the baseball team for the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a member of the Assumption and Sharpshooters Drum and Bugle Corps, former Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, a member of the UMass-Dartmouth Hall of Fame, a former commissioner of the New Bedford Housing Authority, former Director of Veterans Services for the City of New Bedford, former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, and a former volunteer with the presidential campaign for Senator John F. Kennedy.

During World War II, Mr. Beauregard served in the U.S. Army, participating in the battles and campaigns of the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart medal for wounds received in battle, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the American Service medal, the American Theater ribbon, the Asiatic-pacific Theater ribbon, the European-African-middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal.

Mr. Beauregard played professional baseball for the Milwaukee Brewers. He loved young people, teaching, coaching, being with his family in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, seeing humor in everything and making people laugh.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James E. Beauregard, and his wife Margo, of New Bedford; 2 brothers, Emile Beauregard of new Bedford and Edgar Beauregard of Port Charlotte, Fla.; 3 sisters, Claire Gonet, Laurette Beauregard and Alice Cote, all of New Bedford; a grandson, Joshua of New Bedford; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members throughout the United States and Canada.

He was the brother of the late Adrien Beauregard, Paul Beauregard, Cecile Payette and Jeannette Beauregard.
