John Monahan, 93 of North Truro died Monday, November 9, 2011 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, following a short illness. He was the loving husband of the late Sally Monahan, who passed away in October. He and his late wife celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on June 28th.
Born in Jersey City, NJ on February 15, 1918, he was the son of the late Edward and Irene (Cox) Monahan. A World War II Army veteran, he served in the China, Burma, India Campaigns. Honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of First Sergeant, he became the Post Master of the US Post Office in Monsey, NY until his retirement in 1980.
Around 1950 the Monahan family started vacationing in North Truro, and in 1958 they bought a home. They continued to visit part time until they retired in 1980 and then moved to North Truro permanently from Valley Cottage, NY.
Over the years John was active in the community. In Valley Cottage NY he was a volunteer firefighter, serving as the Fire Chief in the1960’s and as a Fire Commissioner for many years as well. He also belonged to several civic organizations. Upon moving to North Truro, John continued his community service. He was a member of several Truro community organizations and a very active member of the Counsel Of Aging (COA). He also served for over twenty years as a Fire Engineer for the North Truro Fire Department.
He and his late wife volunteered with “meals on wheels” and the North Truro Historical Society. He was very active in the Our Lady Of Lourdes Church in Wellfleet serving as a Eucharistic Minister. He was also a Life Member of VFW Post 3152 in Provincetown and American Legion Post 0287 in Wellfleet.
He is survived by his two sons, Kevin Monahan and his wife Laura, Sean Monahan and his wife Lisa of Bear Creek, Montana, Margret Cruz of Secaucus, NJ and Grace Ann Starkey of Monsey, NY., several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was the father of the late Patricia Morris and brother to the late James and Edward Monahan.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 2282 State Highway, Rte 6 Wellfleet on Thursday November 17, 2011 at 10:00 am. A reception will follow in Our Lady of Lourdes parish hall.
