Alice O. (Figueiredo) Lisbon, 80 of New Bedford died November 8, 2011 at New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home after a long illness.
She was the beloved wife of the late Gilbert M. "Mickey" Lisbon with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.
Born in Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde the daughter of the late Joao Souza and Julia (Figueiredo) Lopes de Oliveira and was adopted by her uncle and aunt, Joseph F. Souza, Sr. and Ana Tavares Souza, she lived in New Bedford most of her life.
As a young women, Alice was living and working in Lisbon when her brother, Zack, showed her photo to his friend, Mickey, who fell in love at once. A long-distance correspondence followed which resulted in Mickey asking for her hand in marriage and flying to Portugal, returning to the states with his new bride.
Mrs. Lisbon was a devoted wife and mother who took enormous pride in her grandchildren.
Survivors include her son, Michael Lisbon, Sr. and his wife Mona Lisa of New Bedford; three cherished grandchildren, Tenesha Lisbon, Michael Lisbon, Jr. and Kaylah Durdan, all of New Bedford; her very special great-grandson, Daeshaun Barboza; her brother, Dr. Joseph "Zack" Souza, Jr. of New Bedford; two sisters and a brother, Arcangela Souza, Valentina Souza, all of Waterbury, CT as well as numerous siblings, Maria Fernanda, Maria da Luz, Aldina, Lidia, Bernardete, Crispina, Antonio, Silvestre, João and Eduino, living in Holland, Italy, Portugal, Brazil and Cape Verde; a brother-in-law, John Lisbon of New Bedford; two sisters-in-law, Rosie Soares of New Bedford and Mary-Ann Correia of Carver; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late John Joseph Lisbon.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Saturday, November 12th at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday, November 11th from 4-8 PM.
