Evelyn L. (Prentiss) Merrifield, 96, of The Village at Willow Crossings in Mansfield, passed away on Tuesday November 8, 2011. She was the loving wife of the late Robert J. Merrifield, Sr.
Born in Athol, MA on September 19, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Herbert S. and Grace M. (Holmes) Prentiss. Evelyn grew up in Athol and was a graduate of Athol High School.
A resident of Mansfield for the past 76 years, Mrs. Merrifield was honored in 1978 for her 32 years of service to the Town of Mansfield School Department. She was a retired secretary to the Superintendent of Mansfield Public Schools, a former secretary for the Mansfield School Committee and, when younger, had worked at the former S.W. Card Co. in Mansfield.
Mrs. Merrifield was a member of the Mansfield Congregational Church and throughout the years was actively involved on various church committees. She was also a former member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Mansfield Historical Society and the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges.
Evelyn’s hobbies included knitting, needlework, traveling and gardening. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and will always be remembered for her delightful cooking and enjoyable get-togethers.
She was the stepmother of Alma Ruth Nielsen of Hartford, CT and the late Robert J. Merrifield, Jr. Evelyn was predeceased by her four siblings and is also survived by 5 grandsons, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of her family at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield.
