Mrs. Catherine M. Jones
Augusta, GA---Mrs. Catherine M. Jones, 97, entered into rest on Friday, November 4, 2011 at University Hospital.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at Westover Memorial Park, with Reverend Dan Brown and Reverend Greg Hatfield officiating. A visitation will follow at the graveside.
Catherine Adeline Martindale Jones was born October 19, 1914, in Masonboro, which is in Hanover County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Owen and Anna Martindale.
After graduation, from high school in Wilmington, North Carolina, Catherine worked for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. She married Augustus William Jones on May 1, 1936. The couple lived in Jacksonville, Florida, where Mr. Jones worked with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. They subsequently moved to Augusta, Georgia because of her husband’s transfer and promotion with the railroad company.
In Augusta, Catherine first worked in the office of Fruitland Nurseries and then began work as secretary to the commanding officer of the Dental Division of the Medical Corps, U.S. Army, Fort Gordon. She worked at Fort Gordon for 19 years.
Catherine was a member of Trinity-on-the-Hill United Methodist Church where she attended the Damren Sunday School class. After she retired, she volunteered as receptionist in the church office for many years.
Her husband died in 1997, they had been married 61 years and had no children. She moved to the Brandon Wilde retirement community in her later years and regularly played bridge with fellow residents.
She is survived by a great-niece, Janet Steeper (Timothy) of Trenton, South Carolina and two nieces, Jane Browning (Chris) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Elizabeth Upshire, who lives near Charlottesville, Virginia.
