Obituary

Edward J. Couture, 85, of New Bedford died Thursday November 3, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of the late Alice M. (Freeman) Couture.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Azarias and Louise (King) Couture, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

Mr. Couture was formerly employed as a commercial fisherman for 42 years until his retirement.

During World War II, he served in the U. S. Navy as a salvage diver. He was also a boxer while in the Navy. He was an avid reader and golfer. He loved his animals.

Survivors include two daughters, Rona Mingola and her husband Olavo of Dartmouth and Jayme Couture of New Bedford; a brother, Donald Couture and his wife Fon of Black Diamond, WA; a granddaughter, Caitlyn A. Mingola of Annapolis, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Arthur and Eileen Couture.

A memorial service will be held at the Seamen's Bethel at a later date. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Humane Society and Shelter Southcoast, 31 Ventura Drive, Dartmouth, MA 02747.
