TEWKSBURY - Alexander W. "Al" Day Jr., age 68, a veteran and U.S.P.S. retiree, died unexpectedly on Wednesday morning, November 2, at Saints Medical Center in Lowell, following a long period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of Mary Ellen (Morrissey) Day, with whom he had celebrated a 38th wedding anniversary this past July 12th.
He was born in Chelsea, August 14, 1943, one of three children of the late Alexander and Marian (Nowicki) Day, and was raised in Chelsea. Upon graduation from Chelsea High School, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and served at a missile base in Alaska during the Vietnam War era. Upon discharge, he graduated from Boston State College.
He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 33 years, where he served at several greater Boston offices, and retired from the Government Center office in Downtown Boston.
He will be remembered for his extensive knowledge of the events and history surrounding the U.S. Civil War, and his favorite vacations were to the battle fields around Gettysburg, PA. He also collected and displayed celebrity autographs. "Al" was a communicant of St. William's Parish and was lovingly described as having devoted his life to his family.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Janet M. Day and her spouse Michael S. Brothers of Lowell; three grandchildren, Cassidy Ladd, Michael J. Brothers, Braden S. Brothers; a brother, Michael Day of Malden; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also brother of the late Joanna Calif.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, Nov. 7, in St. William's Church, Tewksbury. Interment was private. Memorials to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. William's Church, 1351 Main St., Tewksbury, MA 01876 will be appreciated.
