Obituary

Morey, Nuria – Of Newton on November 1, 2011 at the age of 82. Survived by her son Erol and his wife Barbara and their children Ian and Katherine of Thornton, Colorado; a son Graham of Vineyard Haven, Mass; and a daughter Nicole and her son Liam of West Tisbury, Mass. Her husband of 53 years, Ronald, died in 2005. Nuria was born in 1929 in Mukden (now Shenyang), China within the Turk-Tatar community resident there. As refugees from the Second Sino-Japanese War, her family fled first to Peiping (now Beijing), then to the Philippines, and then to Australia where she met and married Ronald in 1952. After their wedding, the couple travelled across Asia, Europe and Canada with extended working stays in Istanbul, London, and Montreal, before settling in Newton in 1959. After several years of volunteer work in her children’s schools, Nuria became a Newton Public School System employee, from where she retired in 1988. She took numerous trips with her husband throughout Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia after retirement. Nuria was a gourmet cook, loved trips to the beach as well as skiing, tennis and small boat sailing. She was an avid outdoors person, holding long-time Appalachian Mountain Club and Audubon Society memberships – she and her husband always enjoyed an annual week of hiking and camaraderie at the AMC Echo Lake Camp on Mt. Desert Island, Maine.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 12 at 11 a.m. at the First Unitarian Society in Newton at 1326 Washington St., West Newton.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Appalachian Mountain Club – Echo Lake.
