Cecile Marie Sherman (LeBlanc), age 98, passed away on October 31, 2011 in Gainesville, FL after recovering from a hip fracture.
Born March 16, 1913 in Abram's River, Nova Scotia, Canada, she was raised by her grandparents, Romain and Mary LeBlanc.
She went to a convent for school at age 11 and later moved to Boston, MA in 1929. She converted to Judaism and married Jacob Sherman on March 15, 1936. They resided in Chelsea, MA, where they had a son, Richard, in 1939. The Shermans later moved to Malden in 1972. In 1993, she moved with her son and his family to Coral Springs, FL and later to Gainesville, FL in 2005.
Always able to make friends wherever she went, Cecile was easy-going, loved to sing, enjoyed day trips to Boston, and was known for her impeccable handwriting and her detailed stories about growing up in Canada. She loved fashion and was known for her clothes and sense of style. A caring person, she had a love for cats and was a natural nurse and caretaker to animals, children and people.
Survivors include her son, Richard Sherman of Gainesville, FL; his wife Marcia Sherman; granddaughter Jaclyn Sherman Rhoads and her husband Jesse Rhoads of Orlando, FL; grandson Lee Sherman of Lynn, MA; half-brother Donald Ray of Norfolk, VA and David Ray of San Jose, CA. Cecile was preceded in death by her true love, her husband Jack, a World War I vet, in 1978.
Services will be held on Friday, November 4 at 1 p.m. at the Beth Israel Cemetery, Fuller Street, Everett, MA. A memorial will be held for family and friends in Gainesville, FL on November 12.
