ENGLEWOOD, FL – Frederick R. Carlson, 85, formerly of Gloucester, died Friday October 21, 2011 at the Crestwood Manor in Englewood, Florida. He was the husband of Marjorie (Barnes) Carlson.
Born in Gloucester on July 9, 1926, he was the son of the late Frederick R. Carlson and Grace Madeline (McDonald) Thibodeau.
Fred attended St. Ann’s School and graduated early from Gloucester High School in 1944. He then went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from St. Bonaventure University in New York.
A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, Fred served in the 3539th AAF Base Unit and was honorably discharged in December of 1946.
Fred was employed as the district director of the Boston office of the Massachusetts Food and Drug Administration for twenty nine years before retiring in 1986. He was also a member of the Amvets Post #32 of Gloucester and the Gloucester Lodge of Elks No. 2378.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kurt R. and Patricia (Aceves) Carlson; daughter and son-in-law, Karen A. and Robert Scola; six grandchildren, Jonathan Carlson, Shelby and Nicole Scola, and Gabriel, Benjamin and Amanda Carlson; sister, Barbara (Carlson) Lacey; a brother, Robert Carlson; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Agostini and Carol Begg Martell; and a brother-in-law, Donald Barnes. He was also predeceased by a sister, Grace (Carlson) Withsosky.
His memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5th in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 9 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Interment will take place in the Beechbrook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O.
