Obituary

Anita Gomes Stewart passed away on October 23, 2011. Born in New Bedford on December 24, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Josephine Gomes.
She attended New Bedford High School and then went on to college at Boston University where she received a degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, she worked as a buyer for the Jordan Marsh Stores. Anita worked as a civilian employee for the U.S. Army where she traveled to Korea. She later became a teacher at Charlestown High School for five years.
Anita relocated to Puerto Rico and taught English and Business for five years. She then moved on to Los Angeles, CA in 1972 and worked for the Church of Scientology in many different areas for several years. She returned to her hometown to retire and reunite with her immediate family members in 1997.
Anita is most remembered for her love for people and her ability to relate to all people of all ages and all walks of life. As she quoted "Things have changed in our day and age, economically and culturally but values are important and should remain... as well as a good family structure to produce productive and generally happy individuals."
She will be greatly missed!!

Anita is survived by her brothers and sisters, John Gomes, Joseph Gomes, Maria Veiga, Luiza Gomes and Albert Gomes. She had several nieces and nephews and cousins, as well as her two dearest friends, Bea Harden and Janice Fernandes. Predeceased were her brothers, Emidio Gomes, James Gomes and Antone Gomes.

A private memorial will be held for the immediate family. Donations in her memory may be made to the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home, 200 Hawthorn St., New Bedford, MA 02740.
