Obituary

Paul J. McCarthy of Brockton and beloved husband of Christine (Chisholm) McCarthy, died at the Bay Pointe Nursing Center in Brockton on Thursday evening, October 20, 2011. He was 89 years old.
Born and raised in Medford, he was the son of the late Robert and Abigail (Buckley) McCarthy. Paul attended the Medford Public School system. He has resided in Brockton since 1961. Mr. McCarthy was a WWII Army veteran, entering the military from Medford on January 16, 1941 and receiving his honorable discharge from Fort Devens on August 13, 1945. While in the military, Paul worked as a Construction Foreman. He also had the title of youngest cook in the Army before going into combat in Papuan, New Guinea, Luzon and the Southern Philippine’s. Paul received many awards from his service, including a Bronze Star and a Presidential Citation for his part in the battle of Buna in New Guinea.
He retired from the MBTA after 25 years of employment as a bus & trolley driver. He was a member of the VFW Post 1046 in Brockton for many years. In his spare time he enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout New England and the Canadian Maritime Provinces. Above all, Mr. McCarthy was a very devoted and caring husband, father and grandfather.
Besides his beloved wife of 60 years, Christine, Mr. McCarthy will be very sorely missed by his daughter and son-in-law; Christine A and her husband Arthur Thurston of East Bridgewater, son and daughter-in-law; James P. and his wife Patricia McCarthy of East Wareham, four grandchildren; Jessica and Kara Thurston, both of East Bridgewater and Kimberly and Katie McCarthy, both of East Wareham, siblings; Irene Stopyra of Yarmouth Port, Eleanor Davis, Alice Means and Marjorie Melia, all of Stoneham, Claire Flynn of Yarmouth, Patricia McCarthy of Medford and many nieces and nephews. Paul was also the brother of the late Robert, Francis, Henry and Walter McCarthy.
His funeral mass was celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High Street, Medford, Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at 11 AM. Many relatives and friends respectfully attended. Visiting hours were held in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford, Tuesday, prior to the mass, from 9 to 10:30 AM. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
