William Howard Sanford, 87, of Clarksville, TN died Monday October 17, 2011 at his home. He was born March 5, 1924 in Montgomery County, son of the late Charles Sanford and Pearl Tucker Sanford. He was also preceded in death by a son, William Ronald Sanford and brothers, Robert and George Sanford
Mr. Sanford was the first director of the consolidated Clarksville-Montgomery County School System and princpal of Roosevelt Elementary School. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Salvation Army Board, the Habitat for Humanity Board and the Marine Corps League. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps and served during World War II.
Survivors include his wife Josephine (Jo) Harris Sanford; son Philip H. Sanford (Angela), Atlanta, GA; daughter Rosanne Sanford, Clarksville; sister Dorothy Gene Gray, Clarksville; and grandchildren, Mary Sanford Hay, Elizabeth Hay Johnson, Beckett Hay, Philip Sanford, Jr., Lila Sanford, and Caroline Sanford.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 PM at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Chapel with Dr. Lee Ramsey officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 to 7 PM and Thursday from 12 noon until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Philip Sanford, Beckett Hay, George Johnson, Steve Sanford, McCauley Gray, Charles Gray, and Sanford Gray.
Honorary pallbearers will be Lynn Hunter, Ron Smithfield and Men of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 3155, Clarksville, TN 37043.
