Mr. Robert A. “Bob” Hinton, of Taunton, died Friday, October 14 in St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford, following a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of Alice A. (Almeida) Hinton. He was born 89 years ago in Taunton, the son of the late Oval and Grace M. (Tetlow) Hinton. He was educated in Taunton and had been a city resident for most of his life. Prior to his retirement, Bob had been employed as a Patrolman for the City of Taunton Police Department for 28 years. During his career, Officer Hinton trained many members of both the Taunton Police Department and the Taunton Fire Department in emergency medical procedures, and was instrumental in the City of Taunton acquiring an ambulance to replace the city’s Police Wagon for the medical transportation of city residents. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a Pharmacist’s Mate aboard the USS Saint Croix, and participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach. Bob was a Life Member of the Taunton Lodge of Elks, having served as Exalted Ruler and Chaplain. He was a prominent participant in many Elks activities, particularly the Elks National Foundation. He was also a member of the City of Taunton Patrolman’s Association, which he was instrumental in forming, and was a member of the Mass. Police Association. He enjoyed gardening, playing golf, traveling and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and was a communicant of the former Immaculate Conception Church in Taunton.
In addition to his wife, he leaves: 2 sons: Brian L. Hinton and his wife, Linda of Bedford, N.H., and Richard P. Hinton and his wife, Joan of Taunton; a daughter-in-law: Karen Hinton of Peabody; 1 sister: Lois Anderson of Norton; 5 grandchildren: Robert, Jonathan, Matthew, Amy and Emily Hinton; 2 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Bob was also the father of the late Robert W. Hinton of Peabody, and the brother of the late Opal Squadrilli of Mansfield.
Funeral services will be held from The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home, 467 Bay Street, on Thursday, October 20 at 8:30 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in St. Anthony’s Church at 10:00 A.M. Interment with Military Honors will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M.
