Obituary

ARTHUR J. MELIA, SR., 91, of Hingham, formerly of Duxbury and Marco Island, FL died on Sunday, Oct. 9th, 2011 at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth.
Mr. Melia was born in South Boston where he was raised and educated. He served with the US Navy during World War II and then achieved his Bachelor’s Degree from Northeastern University. Mr. Melia was an accountant by profession and was associated with the engineering firm of Stone & Webster and Quincy Medical Center. For many years he volunteered as a football referee and a baseball umpire at a number of high schools in the area.

He was the husband of the late Anna L. (Fell) Melia and the late Dorothy (McCarthy) Byrne Melia; and father of Cheryl Murphy of Mashpee, Roslyn Melia and her husband Don Simpson and Edward Melia all of Sharon, Arthur J. Melia, Jr. and his wife Constance and Stephen C. Melia and his wife Paula all of Hingham, Ellen Corcoran and her husband Patrick and Robert Byrne and his wife Dale all of Duxbury. Brother of Jean DeLong of Rockland, Lorraine Cavanaugh of Seattle, WA and the late Mary Munier, Gerard Melia, Dorothy McPherson, Claire Greig and Virginia Walsh. Also survived by 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Oct. 13th at 10 AM at St. Paul's Church, 147 North St., Hingham Square. Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Thursday morning prior to the mass beginning at 8:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 85 Astor Ave., Suite 2, Norwood, MA 0206205040. Interment in Central Cemetery, Randolph.
