
Manchester– Peter Burkush, 90, died October 8, 2011 at Catholic Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Manchester on July 10, 1921 the son of Assad and Rose (Stephen) Burkush and had been a lifelong resident of Manchester. He was a Golden Gloves light weight finalist in 1936 then a welterweight finalist in 1938 and 1939.
He served his country in the U. S. Air Force. Following his time in the military he studied music at the New England Conservatory. He was a mechanic and a barber, starting at Telge’s Barbershop and then he owned and operated Pete’s Barbershop in the 60’s. He also worked for Anheuser Busch for 10 years until his retirement. Following his retirement he was a bailiff for the Hillsborough County Court House.
He was an Alderman for the City of Manchester in Wards 9 & 14, and a State Representative for the State of NH. He held membership in the Knights of Columbus.
Family members include his wife of 63 years, Helena (Doucet) Burkush of Manchester, 1 son, Mark P. Burkush and his wife Karen of Manchester, and 1 daughter, Rosanne Sullivan and her husband Thomas of Weare. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Mitchell Burkush, Wilfred Burkush, and 2 sisters, Florence Demos, Lillian Franggos.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM at J. N. Boufford & Sons Funeral Home, 110 Bridge St. Manchester, NH. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 AM in Our Lady of the Cedars Melkite Catholic Church, corner of Mitchell St. and Calef Rd.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
