MABEL E. (BARNES) SMITH, age 80, of Mobile, AL, formerly of Cohasset and Burlington, MA, died on Friday, Feb. 27th at the Singing River Nursing Center in Moss Point, Mississippi. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Mrs. Smith received her Bachelors Degree in Geology at Brooklyn College and then attained her Masters Degree in Education at Bridgewater State Teachers College and her Masters Degree in Library Science at Simmons College. Mrs. Smith lived for 40 years in Cohasset, then for 6 years in Burlington before relocating to Mobile, AL two months ago. She had a busy and varied life starting as a model for Barbizon in New York City and continuing into making maps in Washington, DC for the Island Hoppers during World War II and then assisted in building the first peacetime nuclear reactor, also in Washington. After many years as a homemaker, she then taught in the Rockland Public Elementary Schools for 10 years and most recently as librarian for the Norfolk County Agricultural High School in Walpole. During her years in Cohasset, she was a Cub Scout Leader, and as an avid reader, left a personal library of some 5,000 volumes.Wife of the late Robert B. Smith, she leaves two sons; Roger A. Smith and Stephen B. Smith both of Mobile, AL, and a sister, Harriet "Happy" McDonald of Cary, NC. Also survived by 2 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.Funeral Services Wednesday, March 3rd at 11 AM at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham.Friends may visit at the Downing Chapel on Tuesday evening from 7-9 PM.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Salvation Army,P.O.
