Obituary

Jimmie "Jim" David Stevens, 78, born September 14, 1933, in San Antonio, TX, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, October 4, in the care of his wife and Hospice. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Reba Stevens, and a son Teddy. He leaves behind his wife Marjorie of 30 years as of October 2; his brother Kenneth (Debi) of Canyon Lake, TX; and sister Linda Rose (Joe) of Cleburne, TX. He is also survived by two sons, Leslie of Von Ormy, TX, Alan of Escondido, CA, and one daughter Evelyn of Temecula, CA; also stepsons Larry Barstow (Julie) of Sumner, WA; Michael Barstow, Yakima, WA; CDR Steven Barstow, USN (Deanne) Jacksonville, FL; and Shannon Barstow (Nicole) of Madison, WI; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He retired from the US Navy October 2, 1972, as Senior Chief Petty Officer E-8, with 20 years service, then worked for Howard Hughes Company for 30 years. Since moving to this area in 1988, he has been active in VFW Post 4895, having served as Post Commander, as District Chaplain, and more recently as Post Chaplain for several years. He was a member of the American Legion.
He was active at Hilldale Methodist Church, serving as usher and scripture reader. He alternately taught the Sunday School Founders Class for 8 years. He led a weekly Bible Study at Uffleman Estates and dearly loved "his ladies" there. He was a certified lay speaker and felt privileged to deliver the message at three services one Sunday before he became seriously ill.
Funeral services will be held Monday at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Chapel at 10 a.m. with Rev. Skip Armistead officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 to 5 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.
He will be greatly missed by his faithful dog companion R. Lee, his many friends, and his church family. Contributions may be made to Hilldale Methodist Church debt retirement.
