SALEM - Johannes J. Maki, 86, of Salem, husband of the late Virginia L. (Taylor) Maki, died Wednesday afternoon, September 28, 2011 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, with his family at his side.
Born and raised in Peabody, he was the son of the late Joseph and Annie (Hokkanen) Maki.
Mr. Maki was a Navy veteran of WWII. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater on the USS, Mazama. This ship’s dangerous and vital mission was to receive and deliver ammunition to ships at sea and in port, often during extended periods of battle. He attained the rating of Coxswain.
Prior to his retirement in the mid 1980's, Mr. Maki owned Maki Construction, working as a carpenter on North Shore for many years building many homes and making many friends.
He was a member of Essex Lodge, AF & AM, Salem, the Bay State Post Card Collectors Club and the Danvers Fish and Game. Many will remember him at yard sales and auctions where he would look for trinkets to add to his collections.
Mr. Maki is survived by his daughter Gail (Maki) Lockard and her husband Dennis Lockard and their children, Sam and Rory Lockard, all of Peabody, granddaughter Jaime Maki Smith of Salem, grandsons Jacob Maki of Peabody and John Tricomi of Haverhill, great grandchildren Olivia and Lucas Maki of Peabody. He was the father of the late Stephen H. Maki, Laurie Ann Maki and Karen Lee Maki.
ARRANGEMENTS: A visitation will be held Friday, October 7, 2011 from 4 to 8 pm at the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 8 at 10 am at the family lot in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Salem. Relatives and friends are warmly invited.
