Mary Elsie Scearce Hundley, 86, formerly of 108 Parker Road, Danville, died Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. Born December 16, 1924 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Benjamin Scearce and Isabella Barber Scearce. She was first married to Clifton Rigney, who predeceased her, and later married John William Hundley, who also predeceased her. After graduating from Whitmell Farm Life School, she went to work for Belk-Leggett Company and then became employed as an operator for C&P Telephone Company,after which she became caretaker for her parents. She was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Daniel B. Scearce, Jr. She is survived by three brothers, John R. Scearce, Raymond C. Scearce, and Willie L. Scearce, all of Danville, and two sisters, Florence S. Merricks and Charlotte S. Dodson and her husband Milton Ray Dodson, also of Danville. Other survivors include three nieces and seven nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hundley will be conducted at 2:00 p.m.Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Danny Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, October 3, 2011 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. At other times, they will be at the home of her sister, Charlotte S. Dodson, 840 Corn Tassel Road, Danville. The family appreciates the kindness shown to Mary by the Roman Eagle Nursing Home staff, especially the South Terrace.
