Obituary

Henry Francis Douglass, age 80, of Eastham, passed away Sept. 26, 2011, at the Epoch Senior Healthcare of Harwich after a long struggle against Parkinson’s disease.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Cora (Pharmakis) Douglass of Eastham. He was the loving father to the late Steven Douglass, and Diana (Douglass) Creed of Thompson, Conn.; and grandfather to John Creed IV, age 19, of Thompson, Conn., and Jenna Creed, age 17, of Ellington, Conn. He is survived by a sister, Judy Barton of New Port Richey, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Douglass, and sister Barbara Grant.

Henry was born on May 31, 1931, in Attleboro, the son of Harold E. and Anna W. (Sayer) Douglass. He graduated from Attleboro High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War (1951-1954); he was stationed in Germany and attained the rank of staff sergeant.

He was employed by Western Union for 35 years, serving as manager of credit and collections for New England in the Boston office. He retired in 1988.
Henry raised his family on Agricultural Avenue in Rehoboth, and was active in town government, serving for several years as chairman of the town’s finance committee.

An avid fisherman, horseman, gardener and hunter (with his beloved beagle Lady), Henry was known for his Scottish practicality, his wry sense of humor and his love of the outdoors. He leaves many friends and extended family members.

His family wishes to thank Epoch Senior Healthcare of Harwich, Life Choice hospice care, and Dr. Graham Scott for the compassionate care given to Henry (Scott) during his illness.

A funeral service with military honors will be held promptly at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. A gathering of friends and family will be held nearby following the service. An additional celebration of his life is planned for Oct. 15 in Orleans.

From points west: take Interstate 195 east. Follow Interstate 195 east and exit on 25 east (follow signs to Cape Cod).


Go over the Bourne Bridge – at base of bridge there is a rotary – go ½ way around rotary onto Route 28 south toward Falmouth. Continue on Route 28 south approximately four miles to a second rotary. Go ¾ way around the rotary you will see the sign leading to Massachusetts Military Reservation. Exit the rotary at this point. Entrance to cemetery is approximately ½ mile from the rotary.
