Michael H. Dawes, 70, passed away in his home, surrounded by his family on September 28, 2011. He was the husband of Andrea (Chesney) Dawes, with whom he shared 30 years of marriage.
Born in England on July 19, 1941, he was the son of the late Hubert and Mary Elizabeth (Benstead) Dawes. Mike’s quest for adventure was ever present. Upon graduating from the University of Southampton he moved from England to take an engineering position in CT. He eventually began a 30 year career as an engineer with General Electric, first in New York State, then with Aircraft Engine in Lynn, MA and finally a 5 year assignment for GE in Hong Kong. While there, he purchased a sailing yacht, Jade Woman, and upon retirement, he and Andrea sailed from Hong Kong, through Southeast Asia, crossing the China Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, then finally into the Mediterranean. While in the Med they explored Turkey, Greece, Syria, Lebanon and Israel.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Michael Dickey of Cohasset and Deborah and Stephen Cuneo of N. Reading, four grandchildren, Matthew and Evelyn Dickey, Claudia and Charlotte Cuneo and a sister Margaret Hancock of England. He was predeceased by his son Martin Dawes.
Michael’s family will receive friends on Tues., Oct. 4, 2011 from 4:30-5:30PM with a Memorial Service to follow at 6PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Mike’s name to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA, 02284.
