JAMES L. H. THOMSON, JR. , age 90, a Hingham resident since 1955, died on Tuesday, Feb. 24th at the Brockton Hospital. Mr. Thomson was born in Irvington, NJ. He attended Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, VA, and graduated from Newark Academy in Newark, NJ. An avid sportsman, he played semi-pro basketball, had a tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and participated in the Golden Gloves in his youth.During World War II, he served in the South Pacific as a Special Agent with the 441st Detachment of the Counter Intelligence Corps and assisted in the capture of the Japanese warlord Hideki Tojo. He was a member of the National CIC Association, the Military Intelligence Association of New England, and VFW Post 4632 in Satellite Beach, FL.He was a Claims Manager for the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, first in New York and Newark and then in Boston and New Bedford. He retired in 1976.In Hingham, he was a member of the First Baptist Church and was active in the early days of the High School Booster Club.He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Katharine (Wilson) Thomson of Hingham, a son Douglas A. Thomson and his wife Joy of Raleigh, NC, a daughter-in-law, Diana K, Thomson of Linden, NC, a grandson Alan J. Thomson and a great granddaughter, Ashleigh Thomson also of Linden, NC, and two nieces, Nancy Saeyer of Scarborough, ME and Barbara Teele of Williamsburg, VA. He was the father of the late James L.H. Thomson, III and brother of the late Jean T. Cook.A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, March 6th at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church, 85 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the First Baptist Church.The interment in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne is to be private.
