Robert P. Bunai of West Roxbury passed away September 27, 2011. He was 98 years old, and the last living New England survivor of the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis during World War II. In March 2010 Governor Deval Patrick and Secretary of the United States Navy Ray Mabus came to Bob’s West Roxbury home in recognition of his service and longevity.
Bob had formerly owned and operated Crescent Foodland in Waltham. He later went on to work at the First National Bank of Boston. Bob was active in numerous veterans and Masonic organizations. Lifetime member and long-time Historian of the Aleppo Shriners. Lifetime member and Chaplain Emeritus of the Joseph Webb Lodge A.F. & A.M. 35th Commander of the Sir Galahad Commandery No. 52 Waltham. 20-year volunteer at the Faulkner Hospital. 8-year volunteer at the Shriner’s Hospital. He was also a member of the Order of St. Ignatius.
Bob was the beloved husband of Leila (Dolabany). Dear brother of the late Alfred Bunai, Laurice Cardoos, and Lillian P. Bunai. Beloved uncle of Lois Sykora of CO, Lillian Morgan of MT, Linda Rasmussen of WA, and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Bob’s Funeral Service was held October 4, 2011 at the Church of St. John of Damascus 300 West St. Dedham.
