Obituary

Dorothy L. Gilbert, 88, formerly of 57 Overland St. died Wednesday evening , February 25, 2004at the Belknap County Nursing Home following a period of declining health. She was the widow of Roland J. Gilbert who died in July 2001.

She was born in Laconia on August 10, 1915, the daughter of Scott and Marie Rose (Claviette) Locke. Mrs. Gilbert resided in Meriden CT for 35 years and returned to Laconia in 1982.

While in Meriden, she had been employed for 25 years by Goodman Brothers Co. as a jelly inspector for S.S. Pierce Jellies. Dorothy then worked as a teacher’s aide for ten years in the Meriden elementary schools.

Following her return to Laconia, she helped in starting the Senior Drop-In Center in 1982 and was a member of the American Legion Post #1 Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign wars Post 1670 Auxiliary.

Family members include four daughters, Marie Rose Cass, Mary Jane Chase and Dorothy Beaupre, all of Belmont and Rita Kimball of Franklin; two sons, George Vaillancourt of Northfield and Alfred Vaillancourt of Middleburg FL; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was pre-deceased by two sons, Leo J. Vaillancourt in 1993 and Raymond Vaillancourt in 2002; and two brothers, William “Babe” Carter and George E. Carter.

Calling hours were in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St. Fridayfrom 6 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Ave, Saturday at 10 AM. Rev. Adrien Longchamps, pastor was the celebrant. Spring burial will be in Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Patient Activities Fund, c/o Belknap County Nursing Home, 30 County Drive, Laconia NH 03246.
