Obituary

Mr. Paul J. Sunukjian Stanwood, a resident of Medford for more than 58 years and beloved husband of Doris (Hallajian), died at Brighten Extended Care in Medford on Thursday, September 22, 2011. He was 86 years old.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 1, 1925, he was the beloved son of the late John and Azniv (Kalayan) Sunukjian, and he was loved by his stepfather, the late Michael Melkonian. Mr. Stanwood was a disabled Army veteran of WWII, entering the military at Roxbury, Massachusetts on February 22, 1944 and receiving his honorable discharge from Murphy General Hospital in Waltham on February 11, 1947. While in the Army, Mr. Stanwood worked as a Rifleman and had attained the rank of Private First Class. He had seen action in Rhineland and was awarded the American Campaign Ribbon, the World War II Victory Ribbon, the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon and one Bronze Star.

He worked as a clerk for the U.S. Post Office for 27 years, prior to his retirement. In his spare time Mr. Stanwood loved reading, music, casino trips, and he was an avid fan of Medford High School soccer, track, and football. He had a special love for animals, especially the family cats. He was fondly known to his family as Kitty Papa.

Besides his beloved wife, Doris of more than 61 years, he will be very much missed by his loving children, Jeff P. and his wife Dawn E. Stanwood of Amesbury, Audrey P. Stanwood of Medford, Doreen C. and her husband John Peiffer of Fairfax, VA and Brenda L. and her husband Brian MacWilliams of Palmetto, FL. He was the cherished grandfather of Jeffrey M. and Jillian R. Stanwood, and Christopher A., Shawn M., Aaron J. and Mark R. Peiffer. He was also the half brother of the late Peter Sunukjian of Troy, NY.

His memorial service was celebrated in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford on Friday, September 30 at 10 AM. Many relatives and friends respectfully attended.
