Ann J. Metz, 81, died Sept. 21, 2011, at home unexpectedly. She was born on January 21, 1930 in New York City, the daughter of Dennis Horgan and May (Sullivan) Horgan. She graduated from Cathedral High School and attended City College of New York. She married Sgt. Sampson F. Metz, US Army in March of 1950, in New York City, and during his service gave birth to three sons, Stephen, Robert and Edmund. She remained an Army wife until LTC Metz’s retirement in June, 1971, at which time they settled in Derry. During the Vietnam conflict, she served as a volunteer nurse’s aide in Madigan General Hospital at Fort Lewis, WA, assisting in the reception and treatment of US soldiers wounded in Vietnam. She worked as Manager of the Book Corner store in Hood Commons, Derry, until she retired when the store and part of the store chain were closed. In later years, she and her husband served as ushers in the St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Derry, where she made friends easily, and greatly enjoyed her associations with members of the St. Thomas Aquinas parish, particularly her church usher team. She was very active in charitable programs, and donated regularly to the Franciscan order activities, the Sisters of Mercy, the Southwest Indian Children’s program and numerous other charities.
She is survived by her husband, LTC Sampson F. Metz, US Army (retired), and her three sons. She is also survived by 1 grandson, 2 granddaughters, and 3 great grandchildren.
Visiting hours are Wednesday Sept. 28, 2011 from 4 to 7 pm at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St. Derry, NH, and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday Sept. 29, 2011 at 10 am at St. Thomas Aquinas Church 26 Crystal Avenue, Derry. Burial will follow at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Indian School, 1301 North Main Street Chamberlain, SD 57326.
